7 Tips for Designing Kitchens
I have partnered with Lacey Boyer Design to bring you some #home design tips and tricks more regularly. Lacey put together her 7 tips for designing or remodeling a #kitchen and having #remodeled ours last year (with Lacey’s help!), I can safely say I stand behind these suggestions. Enjoy!
1. Working triangle!
Make it functional. The refrigerator, sink, and cook top should form a triangle for ease of movement from one task to the other.
2. Storage!
Consider your storage needs and proceed accordingly. For some, open shelves work best while for others, closed cabinets are preferable. If you have lots of kitchen appliances make sure you account for storing them. Deep drawers work well for dishes, just make sure not to overload the capacity of the drawer.
3. Keep Walkways Wide!
Paths throughout a kitchen should be at least 36 inches wide. Paths within the cooking zone should be 42 inches wide for a one-cook kitchen and 48 inches wide for a two-cook configuration.
4. Outlets!
Install multiple outlets along the backsplash and on the island so you'll have electricity when you need it.
5. Couples!
The dishwasher should be installed next to the sink for ease of use. The trash, recycle, and compost should live close to the sink — large pull-outs work well for this.
6. Let There Be Light!
Make sure you have a good mix of ambient, task, and accent lighting.
7. Cabinet Hardware!
It can make a big statement as well as serve a very functional purpose. Make sure you consider finishes, materials, and comfort.
